Pay TV Channel GOtv will be the title sponsors for this year’s Cecafa Senior Challenge Cup that begins in Nairobi next Wednesday. This follows a sponsorship package of $125,000 (Sh10.8m) signed between the Local Organising Committee and Cecafa yesterday.
The package will complement several other offers received so far from soft drink giants Coca-Cola (Sh6.5m) and UAP Insurance (Sh5.5m). The county governments of Nairobi, Mombasa and Kisumu have given Sh10 million each while Machakos has given Sh5 million bringing the total to Sh 55.8 million, Sh45 million shy of their Sh100 million target.
Cecafa has also given $100,000 (Sh8.7m) which will be used for the prize money. Winners of the tournament will Sh5.2m while the second placed team receives 2.6m. Football Kenya Federation chairman Sam Nyamweya has exuded confidence that the tournament will be a success.
“We thank GOtv for their sponsorship and now all the pessimists can be put to shame. We are going to have this tournament in Kenya and we assure our sponsors that we will have one of the best events ever organised in the region,” said Nyamweya.
Cecafa Secretary General Nicholas Musonye has also urged fans to turn out in large numbers to watch the matches which have been distributed across four counties. “While we thank GOtv, we should not forget that we as the fans are the biggest sponsors to any event.
I want to urge all Kenyans to turn up in stadiums and watch the matches,” said Musonye. GOtv Managing Director Felix Kyengo has challenged Harambee Stars to win the trophy, as a gift to Kenya in her 50th independence birthday.
“It will be very bad for us to have this trophy taken from us at home. I want to urge the players and technical bench to win this for us as we celebrate our 50 years of independence. We are happy to partner with Cecafa in promoting local soccer throughout the region,” Kyengo said. - By TIMOTHY OLOBULU
